FAQ'S
I will keep adding to this list as there are so many aspects to designing, producing, updating and marketing a website.
One point I would make based on experience. Do not become overwhelmed by this process. Stay focused on your content and making available or originating the raw material needed to get your message across effectively. You don't have to be a designer or programmer - that's my role.

This is a joint effort and if we allow each other to get on with what we're good at it can be both exciting and result in a great website. An asset for your business or organisation.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I am hopeless at techie things - so how could I manage this?

You just need to know about what it is you wish to communicate. I do all of the rest without you ever having to get involved with the technical side of the process.

Why worry about something you don't need to know about? If you want to have say a shower unit installed in your house by an electrician you don't need to understand electrics or to understand the inner workings of an engine when buying a car.

I have a very clear and easy method of working. You provide the raw materials and get on with running your business. I do the design, creative work, programming and setup of your website.

In fact I have produced a number of short, to the point articles on the production process focussed on what you need to do to make your side of web site production a fast, pleasant experience. If you decide to work with me these reports are made available to you free of charge.

So how much will it cost for you to do a web site for me?

This depends on what you want! You knew I was going to say that didn't you.

To give you a better answer I have put together four site PACKAGES along with costs.

For example:
- It costs 350 euros for a PLACEHOLDER package.
- 850 euros for the FOUNDATION package.
- There are also INTERMEDIATE and BUSINESS packages available.

(More information on my PACKAGES page).

As an example the Foundation package includes: registering your domain name, hosting your site on my server, developing and designing your site, upload, check it over and fine tune it. The number of normal pages in this Foundation package is up to 4 pages. You get the same level of service and expertise as the larger sites.

But you need to CONTACT me to get a costing because you can also add MODULES to your PACKAGE as a way to extend the capabilities of your site i.e A Gallery, Shopping Cart, Contact Form, CMS system etc. etc.

How long does it take from start to finish?

For a Foundation web site and after getting all of the raw material from you, on average it takes around 14 working days from start to finish. (Allowing for the fact that other peoples projects are happening in parallel to yours).

I make sure I don't over commit myself so that I can respond quickly to new projects. If you want fast turnaround it greatly depends on me getting your raw material complete and in the correct format, ready to go.

It also depends on you letting me get on with it and no unnecessary meetings.

I'm unhappy with my existing web designer - can you take over?

Yes I can.

No client is locked into having to using any designer or service they are unhappy with. (And that includes my clients).

Remember you own the use of your registered domain name. To move to using my services means pointing your registered domain name to my server which I setup to host your website. Portions or all of your website can be moved to this new server. (Providing your site designer is not claiming any kind of copyright on the work done). On the question of copyright, my attitude has always been you own the materials you've paid for unless we have an agreement otherwise.

On a basic level that's all there is to it.

A. I setup my server to take your website.

B. Through informing the Internet registery of the change - your name is then 'pointed' to this new server setup.

C. I upload portions or all of your old website onto this new server. (Or perhaps a new re-designed website).

....and your site goes live again. Only this time with a new server and new Designer.

As you can imagine this is a great time to update and freshen up your site. (But you don't have to).

What about getting a domain name should it be com or ie or what?

Simplest answer is both. The reason is you are protecting your name from possible dubious competitors. But there is a lot of difference in price and set up time. A dot com name can be registered in minutes online, a dot ie name can take (many), days and cost 3 or 4 times more!

Easiest way is to register the dot com name first and follow up with a dot ie registration afterwards. It's worth mentioning since dot com is almost assumed as it's so universal, many businesses, organisations and individuals are happy just to run with dot com.

To take any of the headache out of it I can register a name or names for you and will make sure it's done properly. (Yes it can be badly or inadequately done, which can cause problems on down the line).

What about my site coming up when people search on Google?

I'm always asked this. Your web site is properly set up right from the beginning to do well with the search engines. After completing your web site, the question really goes from a design to a marketing question. I am constantly amazed when people I talk to about search engines think their web site somehow has a natural right to be in the top ten when someone searches in Google.

Every business or organisation competes with hundreds or perhaps thousands of 'similiar' businesses within Ireland, Beyond Ireland it can multiply into tens of thousands. To get top rankings requires a relentless week by week fine tuning. No one knows outside an inner circle in Google, what the exact formula is to get highly rated. There are however recognised ways to tweak web sites and to measure the results. This is marketing. It happens after your core site goes live. I offer this as a separate Marketing Module and you can read more here.

PS
- Having said that a lot of my clients get high rankings from Google simply because I take time to setup their site well at the beginning. You don't have to invest any extra in marketing your site online if you don't want to, it's purely an option.

I've an old out of date website - what can be done about it?

It can be completely renewed. Like a derelict building the best thing is to leave it go and make a fresh start.

You can keep your existing domain name, provided of course that you still own it. And it's then a case of picking a PACKAGE adding whatever MODULES you require and on with the production. I will host your finished website on my web server and you can enjoy the benefits of your new up to date website!

Website updates - do I have to go through you or can I do it myself?

Both are possible or a combination of the two.

For you to be able to update your site without getting involved in scripting, markup languages or image formatting is possible by setting up a CMS (Content Management System).

This is setup within the structure of your website at the production stage. It works best when the look and structure of your site remains unchanged but specific areas/pages are 'programmed' to enable you to add text and images using software more like a simple text processor.

So there is no confusion, there is a charge for setting this up. A CMS requires specialist knowledge, programming and of course time. It can be a very cost effective, fast and convenient way of keeping your site up to date.

These changes are done using your website browser plus a simple text processor and accessing your site through password protection. This means you can make your changes or updates from anywhere at anytime.

A great combination is to use this ability on areas of your site that frequently need changing, and for more extensive customised work (layout graphics and media), use my services.

A web page may appear 'obvious'. Look there's the text, images and graphics, plain to see, but underneath the surface there is a lot going on with markup language, css, scripts etc.

Why am I charged a yearly fee for my website name and hosting?

When you register a company name within a country you pay a one off fee but on the internet you pay a yearly fee to the Domain Registration Body which, with the likes of a dot com name, is very modest.

For your website to be seen it needs to be uploaded onto a server, (specially setup computer), with a constant very fast connection to the internet. There are specialist companies supplying this service. Cost, facilities and quality of service vary between providers but again this is a yearly charge levied by the hosting service. Through experience and research I use a great provider in the USA which means all of my sites are really well taken care of.

So keeping your domain name live and hosting your website means these two costs, from third parties, have to be met annually.

As a service I take care of this for each of my clients.

Thankfully the costs are modest. (Totalling 125 euros per annum for both name and hosting at present - 2008).

I'm based in 'xyz' and you're in West Cork - can we still work together?

Yes definitely, and in many ways it's an advantage.

It's one of the great things about designing websites, you could be in Nepal, Berlin or Bogata - it doesn't matter. We can communicate by phone, Skype, or email and send files and text by attachment, and we eliminate unnecessary time consuming meetings. This is my preferred way of working.

Even if you are based in, or close to West Cork, Ireland, we should use the technologies of the Internet to make production of your website fast, easy and more enjoyable for both of us.

If there are any questions you would like an answer to but are not listed here, please use my CONTACT form and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.
